written and performed by TJ Dawe
Sort of a sit-down, stand-up comedy. With stories. Examining gender roles, stereotypes and prejudices in our culture. There’s an extensive use of language that some people might consider foul. It isn’t gratuitous.
“Maxim & Cosmo (Highly Recommended)... Taking his title from the men’s and women’s magazines Maxim and Cosmo, Fringe habitue TJ Dawe riffs hilariously on the “gross generalizations and insulting stereotypes” that comprise the age-old battle of the sexes... Dawe’s comic timing and hold on the audience is downright masterful as he keeps us enthralled over an impressive 90 minutes that never seems to flag.” Toronto Star

Performing their masterwork Sisyphus
Karen Jamieson Dance (kjd) under the artistic direction of Karen Jamieson, was formed in 1983. Since that time, the work of this company has been challenging the boundaries of contemporary dance in Canada. Karen Jamieson Dance creates dance as a mythic language that explores the tension between form and energy, discovers the tipping point between structure and raw emotion and develops dancers to speak that language. The current focus of kjd augers a new direction that goes both forward, to new work emerging and backward to a few signature works from the past, while simultaneously connecting the different arenas of the company’s creative practice.

Rita Chiarelli... a voice that can growl at her demons or soar with the angels, a gift for lyric, an ear for melody and the heart to combine them. She is an accomplished singer-songwriter, a gifted vocalist and a skilled musician. Add to that a warm persona and a fine sense of humour and you have all the ingredients for an outstanding performer. Rita Chiarelli’s style defies definition. Although dubbed the goddess of Canadian blues by CBC’s Shelagh Rogers, Chiarelli is equally comfortable belting out the blues; delivering her original material, crooning an Italian folk song or wailing R&B or an Elvis Presley cover tune. At first listen it’s her voice—that three octave range —that garners all the attention! But Rita’s songwriting is also outstanding; three of her four juno nominations have been for albums consisting largely of original material.

Patricia O’Callaghan was born and raised in Northern Ontario. At seventeen she lived in Mexico for a year. It was there that she had an epiphany and decided she should become an opera singer. Up until that time she could not decide whether to become a rock star or a nun and she thought opera was the perfect melding of the two: all the discipline and undebauched life of a nun, but she would still get to sing. She trained at the University of Toronto and the Banff Centre for the Arts. Patricia does actually sing opera at times, mostly contemporary stuff. She recently appeared on jazz clarinetist Don Byron’s cd, A Fine Line, and has been touring with him as well. She’s also had the good fortune to appear in television shows, including the Ken Finkelman series Foolish Heart, her own Bravo! special, and the CBC/Rhombus special Youkali Hotel.

The Dust Poets are a five-piece acoustic folk group with roots deep in the Canadian prairie. They poke affectionate fun at themselves and the world around them while spreading their own irreverent brand of small town angst. The group has performed extensively across Canada and is well known for its powerful stage presence and genre-bending originals that frame hot solo chops and juicy harmony singing.
“The smart lyrics are complemented by a warm combination of country, folk, jazz, and circus music: Think a less strange latter-day Tom Waits, or a more strange Fairground Attraction...”
